PSST Ggoobi Visits Atiak Sugar Factory
The Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury (PSST) Ramathan Ggoobi accompanied by his technical team visited Atiak Sugar factory in Amuru district to assess the progress of the transformative investment in Northern Uganda.
The PSST thanked Amina Hersi, the Chief Executive Officer, Atiak Sugar factory for setting up an impactful investment with a modern farming concept, characterized by mechanization, use of irrigation (work in progress), fertilizers and value addition.
Ggoobi said the main goal of government is to facilitate the process of transformation with a clear vision of what should be achieved. He assured the management of Atiak sugar factory that government will continue to support them to complete the investment phase of the sugar factory so that they can go into production and pay back the money.
"Focus on results and delivering value for money," Ggoobi told Atiak Sugar CEO, Amina Hersi.
Atiak sugar factory with 30,000 acres of land is a strategic and model private sector led impact investment that promises to speed up agro-Industrialisation and agro-tourism in Northern Uganda, in addition to improving the lives of the communties around the factory. The factory is well positioned to contribute to the share of Uganda's manufactured exports under the ten-fold growth strategy in the next 15 years.
The PSST said the communties around the sugar factory will be supported to grow high value enterprises such as growing avocado, vegetables, fruits coffee, cocoa and livestock, adding that this factory will create a multiplier effect for the region and the country.
He also noted that, the location of this factory in Northern Uganda at the border with South Sudan, which is Uganda’s second largest export destination and earner of foreign exchange is a huge advantage.
The Sugar factory CEO, Amina Moghe Hersi expressed gratitude to the Government of Uganda leadership for believing in her and offering unwavering support to ensure that the investment succeeds amidst the challenges they are constantly addressing.
